Who We Are

Mid-Iowa Community Action, Inc. (MICA) is a private, nonprofit organization serving children and families in central Iowa. Established in 1965 to serve children and families affected by the conditions of poverty, MICA provides early childhood, health, family development, and housing services as well as community enrichment programs.

Our mission is to provide opportunities to people in vulnerable situations. We equip them to achieve stability, security, and success. We collaborate with families and partners to create communities where fewer people find themselves in poverty, and those who do have a path out.

Some of our most well-known programs include Head Start, Family Development and Self-Sufficiency (FaDSS), the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), and WIC (Women, Infants, and Children). MICA primarily serves families in Hardin, Marshall, Poweshiek, Story, and Tama counties.

What We Do

Mid-Iowa Community Action (MICA) runs several programs in Story County including a food pantry, family development services, a WIC clinic, and a full-service dental clinic. Our services cover a wide range of issues related to helping to alleviate poverty, including support, referrals, emergency help for basic needs, and much more.
